'Breaking Bad' actor Aaron Paul joins drama 'Fathers and Daughters'

My wife Megan and I never got on the 'Breaking Bad' boat (or should I say trailer) but we are making up for it now on Netflix and are firmly ensconced in season 3.  I've been really impressed with Aaron Paul's Jesse Pinkman and I'm glad to see he's starting to get roles post 'Breaking Bad.'  (Although to be truthful I'm not all that psyched for Need for Speed).

Put Paul down for another role as he's joined he cast of the film Fathers and Daughters, a drama about a father and daughter separated by twenty five years apart and their attempts to reconcile.  Actress Amanda Seyfried will play the daughter while Academy Award winner Russell Crowe will play the father.  No news on Paul's role but 10 to 1 it's Seyfried's love interest.

Paul certainly hasn't stayed still after 'Breaking Bad.'  The aforementioned Need for Speed releases early next year as well as the film Hellion.  Paul is also currently filming Ridley Scott's Biblical epic Exodus.  Pinkman power!

Need for Speed releases March 14, 2014.

Christopher McQuarrie to direct Colin Firth in new thriller

I always like to see a strong match between actor and director.

"Deadline" reports that writer/director Christopher McQuarrie will direct Academy Award winner Colin Firth in the thriller 3 to Kill.  The plot revolves around a businessman (Firth) who witnesses a murder and then is pursued by two deranged psychotic killers.

Sweet.

The film will be an adaptation of writer Jean-Patrick Manchette's novel of the same name which was previously adapted into a graphic novel.  (What hasn't been these days?)

I'm excited to see this matchup.  While I'm not the biggest fan of Firth's, his talent is undeniable and McQuarrie's past works (particularly his writing) speak for themselves.

No news on additional cast members at this time or a release date.

'The Stand' adaptation takes another hit; latest director exits the project

Sigh.  It seems like the road to bringing Stephen King's masterpiece The Stand to the big screen is becoming more volatile than Randall Flagg's temper.

Director Scott Cooper is the latest to exit the project.  After David Yates and Ben Affleck, this now makes the third director who's left this project.  Warner Bros. and Cooper split over....wait for it..."creative differences."  Shocking.

Despite the discouraging news WB is quickly looking to replace Cooper as they are trying to fast track the film.  With a movie that's been in Development Hell so long though I'm not exactly sure what their definition of "fast" is.

While I have a special place in my heart for the 1994 ABC mini-series, I definitely think King's book deserves the big screen treatment.  And I absolutely believe it needs to be a trilogy otherwise it won't do the film justice in the least.

Actor Jason Flemyng auditions for a role in 'Star Wars Episode VII'

It may not be casting news but at least this is solid information and not a rumor.

Actor Jason Flemyng (Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, X-Men: First Class) tweeted that he auditioned for a role in J.J. Abrams upcoming Star Wars film.  Flemyng (I can't get over that spelling) even tweeted a picture of the script although not any content.  (He'd probably be castrated by a lightsaber if he did that!)

I don't mind Flemyng.  He's been fine in the movies he's done but I'm curious to see what role they'd have him audition for.  I can't believe it would be a Jedi.  Seems like a smuggler or some type of bad guy would be more appropriate.

Star Wars Episode VII opens December 18, 2015.

Movie Review: 'Ender's Game'

Plot:  Based on the acclaimed novel by controversial author Orson Scott Card, Ender's Game tells the story of Earth's desperate fight against a race of bug-like aliens known as Formics.  After the Formics attack Earth and nearly destroy the planet, Earth's leaders decide that conventional military tactics won't work.  Earth needs commanders that can think differently.  Consequently, they begin to cultivate children with brilliant military minds in the hopes that a leader will emerge to destroy their enemy.  Enter Andrew Ender Wiggin (Asa Butterfield) humanity's last hope for victory.  As Colonel Hyrum Graff (Harrison Ford) shepherds the young military prodigy through Battle School and eventually Command School, Ender draws inevitably closer towards an ultimate confrontation with the Formics.  But will the path he treads eventually cost Ender everything he holds dear, including his own humanity?

Review:  Movie adaptations of beloved novels are tricky things.  Sometimes they are successful (The Lord of the Rings) and sometimes not so much (Dune).  I'll freely admit that I possess a modicum of favortism when it comes to the Ender's Game movie because it's my favorite science-fiction novel of all time.  Having said that I'll try to be as unbiased as I can.

Director Gavin Hood's Ender's Game is an entertaining, if not perfect adaptation, of Orson Scott Card's beloved novel.  While sometimes heavy on the special effects and disjointed with the pacing, Ender's Game nevertheless captures the spirit of Card's book.

After the abysmal failure of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, more than a few fans were weary of Hood taking on this project, and understandably so.  I admit I felt some trepidation.  Thankfully however, Hood's sophomore effort proves to be exponentially better than his first film.  This time around Hood surrounded himself with excellent actors and a crew committed to bringing his vision to life.  Moreover, Hood had excellent source material to work with and his screenplay adaptation shows he's a fan of the novel.  I was pleased to see he kept the ending to the novel intact as well.  It packs just the right amount of emotional punch I hoped it would.  Aside from a few clunky pacing moments and one particularly awkward line that fell flat, Hood's screenplay and overall direction succeeds.  If I could make one complaint it would be that Hood failed to explore the relationship between Ender and his sadistic brother Peter (Jimmy Pinchak).  The novel Ender's Game focuses on the characters of Peter and Valentine Wiggin as much as Ender.

Some may complain about how heavy special effects play a role in Ender's Game, but I felt the gurus over to Amalgamated Dynamics did a stellar job.  After all this is a movie set almost 150 years in the future involving aliens, space ships, and other planets.  Special effects are kind of key and aside from a few shots here and there it worked.  I was particularly impressed with AD's representation of the Battle Room and the Command Center at the end of the film.  They were PRECISELY how I pictured those scenes when I read the novel, so kudos to them.

The casting choices for Ender's Game were paramount to its success.  Casting the wrong actors for Ender's supporting players, especially his "jeesh" as it's called in the novel, could have unraveled the entire film.  Fortunately, most of the choices were superb.  Aramis Knight brought the perfect amount of cocksureness and street smarts to the role of Bean, Ender's right hand and a double for Ender in many ways.  I was also particularly impressed with Moises Arias as Bonzo Madrid, Ender's sadistic and brutal commander of the Battle School's Salamander Army.  Academy Award nominee Hailee Steinfeld fairs well as Ender's closest compatriot Petra Arkanian.  Her friendship strengthens Ender as a leader while simultaneously helping to maintain  his humanity.  Petra's role parallels Ender's relationship with his sister Valentine as well.  While Abigail Breslin brings a certain nuance and empathy to the role, her character is severely shortchanged from what it was in the book.  I couldn't help but feel cheated because Breslin's character was underdeveloped.  The producers removed the entire Locke/Demosthenes subplot involving Peter and Valentine from the movie.  I believe for the overall tone of the film it was the right call but that dynamic could have enriched Hood's picture that much more.

Although, Harrison Ford has been criticized over the years for pigeonholing himself into "gruff" roles, this approach serves him well in Ender's Game.  Hyrum Graff is by nature a gruff individual, someone who detaches himself from the long term psychological effects Battle School will have on these children.  His sole focus remains on winning the Formic war.  Some of the best scenes in the movie involve his confrontations with Ender.  Oscar nominee Viola Davis represents the voice of reason in Ender's Game as Major Gwen Anderson.  Anderson seems one of the few people concerned with the aftereffects the war will have on these children.  While Davis is good, her character lacks depth and serves as little more than an cypher.  Ben Kingsley kills it as Ender's teacher and former war hero Mazer Rackham however.  His first scene with Asa Butterfield is riddled with tension and the Maori tattoos on Kingsley face are a sight to see.

In the end it all comes down to Asa Butterfield's performance as the titular character.  Butterfield succeeds admirably in the role of Ender.  In point of fact I can't envision anyone else playing this role.  Butterfield manages a pathos and vulnerability to the character I didn't think was possible.  Butterfield captures Ender Wiggin's reluctant evolution from introvert to born leader, his difficulty in maintaining relationships, and Ender's conflicted relationship with violence as a means to an end.  Moreover, Butterfield conveys Ender's struggle to maintain his own humanity.  Not bad for an actor who's not even sixteen yet.

Although Ender's Game doesn't soar to the lofty heights I was hoping for, it nevertheless remains a consistently entertaining and sometimes poignant film.  This movie is definitely a game worth playing.

My rating:  8/10

Official 'Star Wars Episode VII' release date revealed!!!!!

Hey this isn't casting news but at least it's something official.

The House of Mouse in a press release through StarWars.com revealed that Star Wars Episode VII will grace theaters on December 18th, 2015 just in time for Christmas.  Take that Santa!

Reports had J.J. Abrams camp lobbying to move the release date to summer 2016 but Disney apparently refused.  This caused bouts of nerd panic as fans felt there wasn't going to be enough time to produce a quality film.  I think we can put those concerns to rest now.  The movie starts shooting early next year, I doubt it will take longer than six months to film, which leaves over a year for post production and special effects.

Abrams is currently putting the finishing touches on the final script with Lawrence Kasdan.  Kasdan also penned The Empire Strikes Back.

Now that that's out of the way, let's get some casting news bitches!!!!

A double dose of superhero rumor for 'Batman Vs. Superman'

Well who doesn't love a good rumor?  I know I do.  Especially when it comes to tent pole films like Batman Vs. Superman.*  Today just happens to bring us two care of two different sources.

"Schmoes Know" reports that Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace) is currently testing for the role of Wonderwoman for the upcoming DC film.  Kurylenko doesn't have the role in the bag yet but apparently Warner Bros. is extremely interested.  I have to say as hot as Kurylenko is I don't think she fits the physical picture of Wonderwoman.  She's just not voluptuous enough.  Call me a chauvinist pig but I don't think got the curves to play the Amazonian princess.  Warner Bros. needs someone with the physical type along the lines of Katy Perry**.  But not with her "acting" skills.

The second rumor comes care of "Latino Review" which sites a very "trusted source" that the character of Nightwing will appear in the film.  For those of you not a nerd like myself, Nightwing was the superhero persona Dick Grayson, the original Robin, adopted after he parted ways with Bruce Wayne/Batman.  Having Nightwing in the movie makes sense because Zack Snyder's Batman is supposed to be a weathered and experienced Dark Knight.

Obviously there's no substantiating these rumors right now.  But it's definitely peaked my interest.

*I just can't see Warner Bros. keeping the title of this movie as Batman Vs. Superman.  I just can't.

**And just because I can...here's a picture of Katy Perry:

Oh to be Elmo in that picture....

'Twilight' vet Robert Pattinson joins James Gray's 'The Lost City of Z'

Well my interest in The Lost City of Z just took a dive.

"The Wrap" reports that actor Robert Pattinson has joined director James Gray's The Lost City of Z based on the novel by David Gunn. The book:

tells the story of the legendary British explorer Percy Fawcett who, in 1925, disappeared with his son in the Amazon while looking for an ancient lost city. For decades, explorers and scientists have tried to find evidence of his party and the Lost City of Z. Perhaps as many as 100 people perished or disappeared searching for Fawcett over the years. Grann made his own journey into the Amazon, revealing new evidence about how Fawcett died and showing that Z may have really existed right under his feet.

No word yet on what character Pattinson might play but it's a good bet it won't be a sparkly vampire.

Casting for Sarah Connor and John Connor commences for "Terminator 5"

Like it or not Terminator 5, whether it's a reboot or a direct sequel, is coming our way.  After the Terminator: Salvation debacle I'm not too hopeful, althought the fact that AH-NULD is supposedly involved bodes well.  I also like the fact that Alan Taylor, one of the directors of "Game of Thrones," could helm the project.  Now comes the news that one of his fellow co-workers may join the cast of the fifth entry.

According to "Schmoes Know," "Game of Thrones" actress and resident hottie Emilia Clarke is up for the role of Sarah Connor* as are Brie Larson, and Margot Robbie.  I am a huge fan of Clarke.  Forget about the fact that she is smoking hot, she's a damn talented actress.  Clarke could strike just the right balance between toughness and vulnerability that this role requires.

As for the John Connor role actors Garrett Hedlund (above) and Boyd Holbrook of "Hatfield and McCoys" fame are up for the role.  If I had to pick between the two I'd go Hedlund.  I know he takes a lot of shit but I like him.

The real question is why they would cast the roles of Sarah and John with similar ages.  I mean after all John is Sarah's son.  Obviously there has to be some type of time travel angle to this.  And where exactly does Schwarzenegger fit into all this?  I'm speculating here but this could be a big okie doke and Hedlund will really be playing the role of Kyle Reese.

*Ironically one of Clarke's co-stars on "Game of Thrones" Lena Headey starred in the short lived television series "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles."

Saoirse Ronan will not join 'Star Wars Episode VLL'

I'll be perfectly honest, as good an actress as Saoirse Ronan is purported to be, I've never watched her in anything.  Having said that I don't really have an opinion one way or the other on this news.

In an interview with IndieWire, Ronan states that while she did audition for a major role last month, she did not win the part.  To be fair all the hot young talent in Hollywood has been auditioning for these parts.  (Who wouldn't want to join Star Wars?)

I'm kind of torn on the whole casting thing when it comes to Star Wars.  On the one hand I'd like to have some established actors involved* but casting a relative unknown in various parts might be a good way to go.  After all Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher were NOT household names before Star Wars.  The whole idea is striking the right balance I think.

My biggest problem is that I'm sick and tired of waiting for concrete casting news.  The film is about to roll in a few months.  The least they could do is confirm that Ford, Hamill, and Fisher are back.  But maybe it's a good sign that Abrams and crew want to get the casting right.  After all, George Lucas cast Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker solely through a video audition and we all know how that turned out.

*I sooo want Benedict Cumberbatch to play a Sith Lord.

Dwayne Johnson will star in a military horror film....

I'm thrilled that Dwayne Johnson has decided to go back into action films.  For awhile I thought he was going to wreck his career with films like The Tooth Fairy and The Game Plan, but he's helped rejuvenate the Fast and Furious franchise, he was excellent in Michael Bay's Pain and Gain, and he will soon grace the screen as Hercules.

You can now add military horror to Johnson's list. "The  Hollywood Reporter" reports that Johnson will join the film Seal Team 666, based on the novel by Weston Ochse.  The story follows a group of special Navy Seals who fight demons and other supernatural monsters. They discover that a greater supernatural force is threatening the world and then it's on like Donkey Kong.

I'm not exactly sure how I feel about this project.  It could end up being really dark and gritty or totally cheesy.  I remember seeing the novel at Barnes and Noble and thinking the latter.  Currently no other actors are attached and there is no director.

Johnson can next be seen in Hercules: The Thracian Wars, releasing next year.

Lionsgate developing the very unnecessary 8th film in the 'Saw' franchise

I want to play a game.  It's called let's stop with the Saw movies already!

What started out as one of the most original horror films in over a decade resulted in six sequels in he same amount of years, each one worst then the last.  I had sincerely hoped that with Saw 3D's release three years ago, audiences had finally seen the end of the franchise.

I was wrong.

"Bloody Disgusting" reports that production company Lionsgate is pushing for an eighth Saw film.  Lionsgate wants a "creative and fresh way to bring the movies back to the audiences."  You know what that tells me?  Reboot.  Groan.

The unfortunate nature of these films is that they cost only about $10 million to make and end up grossing four times that amount at the box office.  So long as audiences keep showing up there's no reason to stop making them.  In fact I'm a bit surprised we aren't on Saw X right now.  But just because you CAN do something doesn't mean you SHOULD do something.  And I can think of no better example than the Saw franchise.

No word on a story, director, or production start date but I wouldn't doubt it if we see Saw XIII next October.

Yes!!! Sequel to 'The Wolverine' currently in the works

After the marked disappointment of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, I was pleasantly surprised how awesome James Mangold's The Wolverine was.  The plot was fantastic, the acting superb, excellent direction, and beautiful cinematography.

Despite performing only so-so at the box office domestically, The Wolverine raked in $413 million worldwide.  Let's face it, the days of a sequel being solely determined on how much money it makes in the United States is a thing of the past.  China has become an unbelievable market on the world stage and money, after all, is a global language.

It's not surprising then that a sequel to The Wolverine is already in the works.  "Deadline" reports that director James Mangold is currently making a deal to write the treatment for the sequel, with requisite adamantium clawed wild man Hugh Jackman set to return.*  Mangold apparently has a idea of where he wants to take the plot but is keeping mum on the details.  Using the silver samurai source material was a great move for the last film and I truly hope Mangold and company go that route again.  Plenty of good Wolverine stories yet to be pawed (clawed?) through.

Lauren Shuler Donner is set to produce again.  This movie is VERY early in the development phase and I wouldn't bet on a sequel hitting theaters until 2016 or late 2015 at the earliest.

*For those of you counting at home, this would mark the eighth time Hugh Jackman would play the famed X-Man.  (X-Men, X2: X-Men United, X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, X-Men: First Class <cameo>, The Wolverine, X-Men: Days of Future Past <set to release next May>)

Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart join action comedy "American Ultra"

Resident pale mannequin--er actress--Kristen Stewart and Academy Award nominee Jesse Eisenberg are set to re-team for the movie American Ultra.  The script comes care of Max Landis (Chronicle) and will be helmed by director Nima Nourizadeh (Project X).  The plot involves Eisenberg playing:

"an unmotivated stoner named Mike, who lives with his girlfriend Phoebe (Stewart) in a small, sleepy town.  One night their lives take an unexpected turn when Mike's past comes back to haunt him, and he becomes the target of a government opeartor set to wipe him out."

This sounds a little bit like a stoner version of Date Night, and considering I didn't like that film I'd probably like this one even less.  Additionally, fifteen minutes into Project X I wanted to gouge my eyes out, so Nourizadeh's involvement isn't helping my interest any.  I hate to say it but anything with Kristen Stewart in it at this point kind of turns me off.  Although Jesse Eisenberg's in it so it's kind of a wash.  Maybe I'll check it out after all.

American Ultra begins shooting in Spring 2014.

Adaptation of video game Kane and Lynch may be coming to theaters; Gerard Butler and Vin Diesel in talks to star

I've never been big on video game adaptations (Super Mario Bros. anyone?) but the plots for video games have become progressively more intricate, in some ways surpassing movie plots.  Take the video game "Arkham Asylum."  The plot was exponentially better than Batman and Robin.  To be fair however I probably could have taken a steaming dump in the toilet and it would have contained a better plot.

One of the more popular games in recent years has been "Kane and Lynch."  The plot:

The game follows Kane, a death row inmate who, along with a schizophrenic killer named Lynch, is sprung from prison to retrieve a stolen fortune.  Kane travels to Los Angeles, Japan, and Cuba with Lynch acting as the team's watchdog in order to save his wife and daughter.

I've never played the game myself but the plot sounds like a very anti-heroesque story which is all the rage right now.  I think it could make for a good thriller.

Unbeknownst to me, this project has apparently been gestating for quite some time, as far back as 2008 in fact. At the time Bruce Willis was set to play Kane but that fizzled out.  Since then the project has descended into Development Hell, however "THR" now reports that the project has some life again.  Gerard Butler is apparently in talks to join the project.   He would be taking over for Bruce Willis in the Kane role.  Also Vin Diesel isn't just in talks, he's flat out been offered the role of Lynch.  Director F. Gary Gray (The Negotiator) is attached to direct.  He previously worked with Butler on Law Abiding Citizen.

While I'm kind of lukewarm on the project, the idea of Butler and Diesel teaming up appeals to me.

Currently there's no production start date or release date.
