Lionsgate keeps Hunger Games director in the cage for the sequel and hires a writer for next installment

The eagerly anticipated film The Hunger Games (the first novel in a wildly successful series by Suzanne Collins) is still over two months from release, however studio Lionsgate is already banking on the film being a box office hit. Lionsgate has retained the services of director Gary Ross (Seabiscuit, Pleasantville) for the next film and hired Simon Beaufoy to write the script.

That second name came as a bit of a shock to me. Beaufoy's previous script credits include 127 Hours and Slumdog Millionaire. That's one hell of pedigree. Apparently Lionsgate believes a guy this good at book to screen adaptations will fit in rather nicely. I concur. His inclusion only lends an extra amount of legitimacy to a series which based on the trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNxb28j5C1w&ob=av3e) already looks impressive.

The Hunger Games releases March 23rd of this year while the sequel, Catching Fire, is slated to release November 22, 2013.*

*I would bet anything that the film adaptation of Stephen King's latest novel 11/22/63 (directed by Tony Scott) releases that same day as well. It is after all the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy assassination.
