In a move that gets my vote for "Most Impatient Marketing Move of 2012," AMC theaters are already selling tickets to the midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises, even though the film is not set to release for another six months. Currently, the pre-ticket sales are in select cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York but if all goes well the number of cities may expand.
If you think that this gesture by AMC is decidedly premature and a waste of time and resources you'd be wrong.
Dead wrong.
According to website Slashfilm, theater managers polled numerous fanboys, who saw the 6 minute prologue to The Dark Knight Rises last month at the screening of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, to see if they wanted to purchase tickets for TDKR six months in advance. The response was, not surprisingly, overwhelmingly in favor. The result? Every AMC theater in the cities previously mentioned HAS SOLD OUT THE MIDNIGHT SCREENINGS SIX MONTHS IN ADVANCE.
Look I'm a huge fan of Batman and I plan on buying advance tickets--hopefully to IMAX. However, even I would never consider buying tickets this far in advance. Who the heck knows what I'll be doing in six months? On the bright side for Warner Bros. if they had any doubts that this film would be a massive success I think we can put them to rest.
The Dark Knight Rises opens July 20th of this year.
