Neil Gaiman's 'Sandman' finally coming to the big screen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt attached to star and possibly direct!

I'm sad to say that I've never read anything by acclaimed author Neil Gaiman, but all of my nerd friends who have swear by his work.  Well this is news that will probably send fans of the author, and his most well-known character, into a full-blown nerdgasm.

"Badass Digest" reports and Joseph Gordon-Levitt's official Facebook page confirms, that actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt will take on the role Morpheus in an upcoming Sandman film.  Recently writer David S. Goyer pitched the film to Warner Bros. and Goyer and Gordon-Levitt are currently finalizing a deal with the studio.  Gordon-Levitt will co-produce, star, and possibly direct the feature.

For those of you unfamiliar with the story:

The Sandman series shifts between horror and fantasy, and the central character is Morpheus, the personification of dreams. After being held captive 70 years, Morpheus escapes, gains revenge and rebuilds his crumbling kingdom while trying to adapt to the times.
Gordon-Levitt remains an excellent actor and with the success of his recent film Don Jon also proves he is more than capable of directing a film.  One thing's for sure is that the "Sandman" series is sacred ground for nerds and it's going to require someone with the requisite amount of passion and enthusiasm to live  up to nerds' expectations.  I think Gordon-Levitt fits the bill, and probably alleviates some fans' trepidation about Goyer's involvement.
