I’ve only ever seen about five minutes of the original
Suspiria. All I remember clearly are the
bright colors and discordant music. For
many it is Dario Argento’s masterpiece and most fans have been against a remake from
the start. Well take heart hardcore
Suspiria fans as the remake may have come to a grinding halt.
At first the issue seemed to be legal in nature but
according to prospective director David Gordon Green, the matter now falls into the
marketing arena. In an interview with “Indiewire”
Green states that, “Nobody’s really begging for something that’s elegant,
classy, and expensive.” Green goes on to
say the people are more interested in the gritty found footage horror films
such as Paranormal Activity. It’s sad to
say but I’m in complete agreement with Green.
It seems people are more interested in torture horror (The Human
Centipede) and found footage films. This
is quite the travesty when you consider that a lot of these films appeal to the
lowest common denominator. Don’t get me
wrong, I loved the Evil Dead remake, but that movie also had solid acting and a
good story going for it. There’s no
reason to forgo a strong plot and
impressive performances and substitute cheap scares and gore. Makes me long for the days of The
Exorcist and Rosemary’s Baby.
Green is currently promoting his latest project Prince
Avalanche while Suspiria remains in Development Hell.
